Hello all you fitness warriors out there! It’s your buddy, Alex here, and today I’m going to share some useful nutrition tips specifically tailored for athletes. You know, as an athlete myself (yes, Sunday morning jogging counts!), I’ve found out the hard way that you can’t expect your best performance on a diet of pizza and soda. Who knew, right? So, I thought I’d drop some of the knowledge I’ve gained on my journey (and from chatting with a few professional nutritionists too).
Nutrition – It’s More Than Just Food
Firstly, a lesson I learned years ago that changed my entire perspective – nutrition isn’t just about food, it’s about fueling your body to achieve its maximum potential. And trust me vegan or carnivore, Crossfit guru or marathon lover, we all need to get our fuel right. According to span.comhttps://spanoundation.org/sports-nutrition-for-athletes/
The Basics
Now to the juicy part – no pun intended. So, here are some basics I picked up:
- Stay Hydrated:
No, not just with your morning coffee or energy drinks! Make water your best friend. Pre, post and during workout – you got it, bring that water bottle. - Don’t Skip Meals: Yep, breakfast is actually the most important meal of the day. Don’t let your body go into starvation mode because it messes up your metabolism. Trust me, been there, done that!
- Balance Your Macros: Not all calories are created equal! Make sure you’re balancing your intake of carbs, protein, and healthy fats. Half of my struggle with diet was getting my head around this, but it’s worth it.
I’m going to pause for breath now. But don’t go running off just yet. There’s more to come. Stay with me, guys and gals!
Superfoods for Super Performance
As an athlete, your nutritional intake should not just be nutritious but also delicious. After all, man & woman cannot live on boiled chicken and broccoli alone, right? Time to add in some superfoods!
Ever heard of chia seeds? Or how about beetroot juice? Well, these are not just additions to your Insta smoothie. They pack quite the nutritional punch. Back in 2011, researchers found that chia seeds provide athletes with a bunch of nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and proteinhttp://www.jissn.com/content/8/1/24. And as far as beetroot juice is concerned, it actually increases stamina by reducing oxygen intake which can give your performance a significant boosthttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5295087/.
